We buy all types of calves direct from dairy farms for our collection centres and contract calf rearing units. In excess of 12,000 calves a week currently pass through our centres and this number is set to grow in the foreseeable future as more dairy farmers join the Blade system.
Calves are bought on a simple grade and weight basis to ensure that Producers are suitably rewarded for the quality of the calves that are put forward. Competitive prices are set on a weekly basis.
To realize top prices, calves must be at least 50kgs on arrival in the collection centre, and have had sufficient colostrum in their first few days of life. Random blood testing is carried out in both the collection centres and rearing units to monitor calf colostrum intakes.
We have particularly strong markets for Holstein Friesian males and the native breeds that have been chosen for our calf improvement programme. Forward price contracts can be drawn up for calves born to certain selected Genus ABS Aberdeen Angus bulls, thus giving the producer the reassurance that all his calves are sold at an agreed price.
